In a live session on X Spaces, Musk stated that he had discussed the agency with President Trump, who agreed to dismantle it, calling it "beyond repair." This announcement follows the suspension of two USAID security officials who refused to grant Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) access to classified materials. Despite lacking proper security clearance, DOGE members ultimately gained entry into the agency's classified information. Musk further accused USAID of being a "criminal organization" and insisted it was time to eliminate it.

The shutdown of USAID is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to cut federal programs and reduce government regulations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has implemented a freeze on foreign aid, leading to massive layoffs and halting USAID's global humanitarian, development, and security programs. The agency’s website disappeared without explanation, and many of its employees have been furloughed. Additionally, Musk's DOGE team carried out a similar operation at the Treasury Department, accessing sensitive financial information, which led to the resignation of a senior Treasury official.

The move has sparked significant political backlash, with Democratic leaders, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren, accusing Trump of allowing Musk to gain control over government data and funding. Critics argue that shutting down USAID could have devastating consequences for global aid efforts, as the agency manages billions of dollars in assistance across over 100 countries.
