Karnali Chief Minister Expands Cabinet, UML Joins Government with Three Ministers

Nepal Sambat 1146, Gunlathwa 7, Saptami (August 19, 2026), Wednesday, Banpijhyala. Karnali Province Chief Minister Mangal Bahadur Shahi expanded his Cabinet immediately after securing a vote of confidence from the Provincial Assembly.

With Wednesday’s expansion, the CPN-UML has formally joined the Karnali provincial government with three ministries.

An agreement on the allocation of ministries was reached on Wednesday between Chief Minister Shahi and Yam Lal Kandel, leader of the UML Karnali Province parliamentary party. Following the agreement, three UML lawmakers were inducted into the Cabinet.

Under the new power-sharing arrangement, Tek Raj Pacha from Jumla has been appointed Minister for Economic Affairs and Planning, Jeet Bahadur Malla from Mugu has been appointed Minister for Social Development, and Kal Bahadur Hamal from Humla has been appointed Minister for Water Resources and Energy Development.

All three newly appointed ministers took the oath of office and secrecy on Wednesday at the Office of the Province Chief. Province Chief Yagya Raj Joshi administered the oath.

Chief Minister Shahi expanded his Cabinet 22 days after assuming office. Due to disagreements among the coalition partners over the allocation of ministries, Shahi had previously been handling all ministerial portfolios himself.

With the UML now joining the government, the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) still has to nominate three ministers.
