नेपाल सम्वत् ११४५ चौलाथ्वः १ (१७ चैत्र, २०८१) मार्च ३०, २०२५ ,आइतबार, बाँपीझ्याला ।The death toll from Myanmar’s devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake has surged to 1,644, with injuries reaching 3,408 and 139 people still missing. The increase highlights the challenges of confirming casualties across the widespread disaster zone. Neighboring Thailand also reported 17 deaths, with 10 fatalities occurring in the collapse of a high-rise building near Bangkok’s Chatuchak market. Rescuers continue to clear debris, but hope for survivors is fading.
Rescue efforts in Myanmar face significant challenges due to infrastructure damage, including the collapse of Naypyitaw International Airport’s control tower. The ongoing civil war further complicates aid delivery, with conflict-affected areas difficult to access. In response, Myanmar’s shadow National Unity Government (NUG) declared a two-week unilateral ceasefire in quake-hit regions to allow relief efforts. The NUG also pledged cooperation with international organizations to establish medical and rescue operations, while reserving the right to defend itself if attacked.

International aid is being mobilized, with China sending 135 rescue personnel and $13.8 million in assistance, while Russia dispatched 120 rescuers and medical teams. India, South Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore have also pledged support. The U.N. allocated $5 million for emergency relief, with a convoy of 17 cargo trucks carrying essential supplies set to arrive from China. However, a severe shortage of medical resources, including trauma kits and essential medicines, is hampering response efforts.
The earthquake caused widespread devastation in Mandalay and Naypyitaw, toppling buildings, collapsing roads, and disrupting communications. Despite the crisis, military attacks reportedly continued in some regions. Experts warn that Myanmar’s vulnerable construction and high population density in affected areas have worsened the disaster’s impact. With relief efforts hindered by war and logistical obstacles, concerns remain over how aid will be distributed and whether it will reach those most in need.
