नेपाल सम्वत् ११४५ थिंलागाः १३ ( १३ पुष , २०८१) डिसेम्बर २८, २०२४ , शनिबार, बाँपीझ्याला । Public transport in Kathmandu continues to pose significant challenges for people with disabilities, with safety concerns and a lack of accessibility being major issues. Visually impaired commuter Surakshya Paudel recounts how she fractured her hand after falling from a moving bus due to a hurried driver. Such incidents are frequent, as drivers often rush to avoid traffic fines or reprimands.
Disability rights advocates highlight how drivers and conductors fail to assist passengers with disabilities and often avoid stopping for them altogether. The absence of fixed bus stops, poorly designed bus stairs, and inadequate pavements worsen the problem. Passengers with visual or hearing impairments also struggle to identify bus numbers and are sometimes dropped at incorrect stops.

Transport operators cite traffic congestion and pressure from traffic police as reasons for their haste, while authorities maintain that managing traffic flow is a priority. Experts and disability activists emphasize the need for designated bus stops, disability-friendly vehicles, onboard announcement systems, and better driver training to improve accessibility.
Although legal provisions like the Accessible Physical Infrastructure and Communication Services Directive, 2012, mandate accessible transport services, enforcement remains inadequate. Activists and transport stakeholders agree that collective efforts, including societal awareness and government action, are needed to make public transport safe and inclusive for people with disabilities.
