नेपाल सम्वत् ११४५ दिल्लाथ्वः १ (असार १२, २०८२ ) जून २६, २०२५ ,बिहिबार, बाँपीझ्याला । India has consistently supported Nepal in times of crisis, often stepping in when major global powers remain passive. A recent example is India's quiet evacuation of Nepali nationals from conflict-hit Iran, a move initiated at Nepal’s request and carried out without fanfare. This action mirrors earlier gestures, such as India's early supply of COVID-19 vaccines to Nepal during the pandemic, even when its own resources were strained. These acts are part of a broader, longstanding pattern of Indian assistance, characterized by discretion and a lack of political conditions.
Despite this support, Nepal’s political leadership frequently promotes anti-India rhetoric. This hostility, often rooted in domestic political expediency and influenced by foreign encouragement, has come at the cost of Nepal’s national interest. Rather than acknowledging India’s steady partnership, many politicians use nationalism as a veil for poor governance, leveraging anti-India sentiment as a shortcut to political gain. This attitude ignores the deep economic, cultural, and social connections between the two nations and risks damaging a vital partnership.
Adding to this dynamic is the role of certain Western diplomats and UN officials in Kathmandu, some of whom subtly encourage anti-India positions to curry favor with local politicians. A particularly ironic case is that of an Indian national heading a UN agency in Nepal, who distanced himself from his own nationality and purged competent Indian experts to appease Nepali officials. Such performative actions ultimately hurt Nepal more than they help, resulting in the loss of valuable technical expertise and undermining progress in crucial sectors.
Nepal now stands at a crossroads. While some believe China presents a viable alternative to India, the failures of Chinese-funded projects, like the controversial Pokhara airport, suggest otherwise. India, on the other hand, is on the cusp of major economic expansion, offering Nepal unmatched opportunities for growth and integration. For Nepal to thrive, its leaders must abandon reflexive hostility, recognize India’s consistent support, and choose pragmatic cooperation over populist posturing.
