नेपाल सम्वत् ११४५ तछलाथ्वः ९ (जेठ २१, २०८२ ) जून ४, २०२५ ,आइतबार, बाँपीझ्याला । On Tuesday, five countries—Bahrain, Congo, Liberia, Colombia, and Latvia—were elected to the United Nations Security Council in uncontested elections and will begin their two-year terms in January. The vote took place in the 193-member General Assembly, where each country received strong support. Latvia, a first-time member, highlighted its historical struggle for independence and emphasized its commitment to promoting peace and multilateralism. Foreign Minister Baiba Braže pledged to advocate for global peace, including efforts in Ukraine, the Middle East, and Africa.
Bahrain, returning to the council for a second term, will represent the Arab group. Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani reiterated Bahrain’s dedication to regional stability, with a particular focus on resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He stressed the need for a ceasefire in Gaza, humanitarian aid, and progress toward a two-state solution. These remarks come amid continued Security Council inaction due to veto powers exercised by Russia on the Ukraine conflict and by the United States on matters related to Israel and Gaza.

Despite its foundational mandate to ensure international peace and security, the Security Council remains hamstrung by its outdated structure, particularly the veto power held by its five permanent members— the U.S., Russia, China, Britain, and France. Efforts to reform the council to better reflect today’s geopolitical landscape, including calls for permanent representation for Africa and Latin America, have long stalled. The new members will replace Algeria, Guyana, South Korea, Sierra Leone, and Slovenia in January, maintaining the council's rotating membership of ten.
Representatives from Congo, Liberia, and Colombia spoke of their countries’ readiness to contribute. Congo's Foreign Minister highlighted Africa’s unity and her country's deep experience in managing conflict and the impact of natural resources and environmental changes. Liberia, returning after more than 60 years, emphasized its resolve to confront global issues like inequality and climate change. Colombia underscored a commitment to peace, human rights, and environmental harmony, inviting the international community to join in shared responsibility.
