Thousands in Nepal want monarchy back as public frustration with politics grows

नेपाल सम्वत् ११४५ चिल्लाथ्वः ११ (२६ फाल्गुन, २०८१) मार्च १०, २०२५ ,सोमबार, बाँपीझ्याला ।Thousands of supporters welcomed Nepal’s former king, Gyanendra Shah, in Kathmandu on Sunday, demanding the reinstatement of the monarchy and Hinduism as the state religion. Around 10,000 demonstrators blocked the main entrance of Tribhuvan International Airport as Gyanendra returned from a tour of western Nepal, chanting slogans in support of the monarchy.

The protest, though large, remained peaceful as riot police prevented demonstrators from entering the airport. Many Nepalis have grown disillusioned with the republic, citing political instability, corruption, and economic struggles since the monarchy was abolished in 2008. Nepal has seen 13 different governments in the past 16 years. Some former republic supporters, like carpenter Kulraj Shrestha, admitted changing their stance, blaming politicians for failing to improve the country.

Gyanendra, who was forced to relinquish power in 2006 following mass protests, has not publicly responded to the calls for his return. While his supporters continue to rally, the likelihood of his reinstatement remains uncertain.
