Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, during an event at the Nepali Army Headquarters marking United Nations Day 2024, commended the courageous peacekeepers around the world, particularly those serving in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). In his speech, he praised their dedication, fearlessness, and contributions to global peacekeeping efforts. He emphasized how the peacekeepers’ work under complex conditions highlights the true spirit of peacekeeping and inspires the global community to uphold the UN’s mission of promoting international peace and security.
Prime Minister Oli also spoke about Nepal’s long-standing commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter, including its contributions to global peacekeeping missions. He highlighted that Nepal’s foreign policy revolves around peaceful coexistence, respect for sovereignty, and non-interference. Oli reiterated Nepal’s firm support for multilateralism, stressing that global challenges like climate change, poverty, and security threats demand collective international action. He expressed Nepal’s willingness to continue sending skilled and well-trained peacekeepers when called upon by the UN.
Furthermore, Oli raised concerns about the growing challenges peacekeeping forces face, including increased risks from violent groups and complex conflict situations. He reaffirmed the Nepalese government’s commitment to ensuring the safety, readiness, and training of its peacekeepers. Additionally, he emphasized Nepal’s dedication to promoting the meaningful participation of women in peacekeeping missions, acknowledging the symbolic importance of their role in conflict resolution and women’s empowerment. Lastly, the Prime Minister used the occasion to discuss global environmental concerns and reiterated Nepal’s support for collective climate action to safeguard vulnerable nations like his own.
