Nepal and India have agreed to reactivate existing bilateral mechanisms to address outstanding issues during a recent meeting between Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Oli and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting, held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, focused on strengthening relations across various sectors, including trade, energy, border management, and connectivity.
Both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining communication at the highest political levels. They agreed to follow up on unresolved issues through established mechanisms. These mechanisms include over a dozen committees and working groups dedicated to different areas, such as trade, border management, and water resources. The leaders expressed commitment to resolving disputes and deepening cooperation in areas like energy and technology.
Oli highlighted Nepal’s interest in trouble-free relations with India, while Modi reiterated India’s desire to resolve outstanding issues through dialogue. The two leaders also discussed Modi’s upcoming visit to Nepal, although no specific dates were confirmed. Modi has previously visited Nepal five times, marking the high priority of Nepal-India relations in India’s “Neighborhood First” policy.
During the meeting, Modi also congratulated Nepal for becoming the 101st member of the International Solar Alliance, reflecting both nations’ shared focus on regional climate challenges. This high-level interaction marks a continuation of efforts by both nations to foster closer ties, address pending issues, and explore new opportunities for cooperation.
