Latest deadly weather in US kills at least 18 as storms carve path of ruin across multiple states

Powerful storms have wreaked havoc across Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, killing at least 18 people, injuring hundreds, and causing widespread destruction. The severe weather has left a significant trail of damage, with the worst-hit areas spanning from north of Dallas to the northwest corner of Arkansas. The storm system is expected to bring more violent weather to other parts of the Midwest, with forecasters predicting that the greatest risk will shift to the east, covering a broad area from Alabama to near New York City.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency early Monday, citing multiple reports of wind damage and tornadoes. The storms have resulted in fatalities and injuries in several states:

  • Texas: Seven deaths were reported in Cooke County, near the Oklahoma border. Among the dead were two children, ages 2 and 5. The storm caused significant damage to homes and a truck stop where about 50 people sought shelter in a restroom. Texas Governor Greg Abbott reported that around 100 people were injured, and more than 200 homes and structures were destroyed. The hardest-hit area, Valley View, experienced winds reaching an estimated 135 mph (217 kph).
  • Oklahoma: Two people were killed, and numerous homes were destroyed. Injuries included guests at an outdoor wedding.
  • Arkansas: Eight people died statewide. An emergency official mentioned that two of the deaths were indirectly related to the storm, including a heart attack and oxygen deprivation due to a power loss. Specific fatalities included a 26-year-old woman in Boone County and additional deaths in Benton and Marion counties.
  • Kentucky: A man in Louisville was killed by a falling tree. Governor Beshear’s declaration came amid multiple reports of wind damage and tornadoes.

The storms have left tens of thousands without power across the affected regions. The response efforts include search and rescue operations, with officials confirming that no more deaths are expected and no one is currently reported missing in Texas. However, responders are conducting final searches to ensure no one is overlooked.

This severe weather event follows successive bouts of destructive storms in Texas, including those that recently killed eight people in Houston. The storm’s impact on the community and infrastructure has been profound, with significant recovery efforts anticipated in the coming days.
