Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health and Population, Upendra Yadav, recently emphasized Nepal’s commitment to a rights-based approach in addressing population and development issues during his address at the fifty-seventh session of the Commission on Population and Development in New York.
DPM Yadav highlighted Nepal’s dedication to implementing the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) since its adoption in 1994. He emphasized that Nepal’s policies, plans, and programs are geared towards enhancing the quality of life for all citizens, with a focus on creating a just, inclusive, and equitable society.
During an informal plenary meeting marking the thirtieth anniversary of the ICPD, DPM Yadav acknowledged global progress in poverty reduction, improved health systems, increased life expectancy, and advancements in gender equality and reproductive rights. However, he noted persistent challenges and inequalities within and among countries, exacerbated by pandemics, conflicts, climate change, and other crises.
DPM Yadav reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to advancing people-centered development, human rights, gender equality, and sexual and reproductive health and rights. He emphasized the importance of reducing preventable maternal mortality, promoting comprehensive sexuality education, enhancing youth participation in decision-making, and strengthening the National Population Data system to fully realize the goals of the ICPD’s plan of action.
Overall, DPM Yadav’s statements underscore Nepal’s proactive stance on population and development issues, emphasizing the importance of inclusive and sustainable approaches to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and ensure the well-being of all citizens.
