Wheelchair marathon organized in Kathmandu

The Bodhisattvas in Action (BIA) Institute organized a wheelchair marathon in Nepal, attracting over 200 participants, including both men and women. The marathon route spanned various landmarks in Kathmandu, showcasing the city’s vibrant atmosphere. Special Advisor on International Disability Rights (SAIDR) Sara Minkara and U.S. Ambassador to Nepal Dean R. Thompson participated in the event, highlighting the importance of sports in empowering persons with disabilities.

During the program, Minkara emphasized the role of adaptive sports in breaking down societal barriers and promoting inclusion. She stressed the significance of representation in countering stigma and discrimination against persons with disabilities, advocating for increased visibility in various aspects of society, including sports, film, and television.

Aishwarya Kumari Kumal and Ramesh Khatri emerged as winners in the women’s and men’s categories, respectively, with impressive times. Minkara awarded cash prizes to the winners, acknowledging their achievements and highlighting the BIA Institute’s annual initiative to promote adaptive sports.

The U.S. Embassy in Nepal has a history of supporting sports programs as a means to foster unity and inclusivity across diverse communities, transcending socioeconomic, gender, and caste barriers. Through such initiatives, the embassy aims to promote social cohesion and empower marginalized groups in Nepal.
