The UK Minister of State for Development and Africa, Andrew Mitchell, concluded a visit to Nepal on 19-20 February, during which he announced a new development portfolio aimed at addressing key challenges and fostering sustainable growth in the country. The UK’s new development portfolio will focus on various aspects, including tackling the climate crisis, mobilizing international finance for development, delivering economic transformation, and promoting governance and inclusion. According to a press release from the British Embassy, the UK will provide £400 million ($505m) in grants by 2030 to support these initiatives, with the goal of creating 13,500 jobs, attracting over $1 billion in investment, and improving access to quality health and education services for two million women and girls.
Minister Mitchell emphasized the longstanding partnership between the UK and Nepal and their shared commitment to building a resilient and prosperous future for Nepal. During his visit, he observed the UK’s contributions to marginalized communities, climate resilience, and sustainable economic transformation in Nepal. The new development portfolio aims to mobilize funding to support Nepal’s growth and development efforts, aligning with the country’s transition from Least Developed Country status.
The minister highlighted Nepal’s progress in various areas, including increased access to electricity, higher literacy rates, and improved healthcare outcomes. Despite these advancements, challenges persist, and collaborative efforts are needed to address them. Minister Mitchell underscored the importance of creating an enabling environment for private sector investment, ensuring legal reforms, and prioritizing the needs of women and girls in development initiatives.
During his visit, Minister Mitchell met with key Nepali officials, including Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Foreign Minister NP Saud, and Finance Minister Prakash Sharan Mahat. They discussed UK support for Nepal’s Investment Summit in April 2024 and explored reforms necessary to attract investment and mobilize finance. Additionally, the minister welcomed recent agreements by Nepal’s Cabinet on programmes supporting green and inclusive growth and promoting more inclusive business practices.
Minister Mitchell also visited projects funded by the UK, such as the Upper-Trishuli-1 Hydropower project and initiatives supporting job creation, entrepreneurship, and climate resilience. These efforts reflect the UK’s commitment to supporting Nepal’s development agenda and addressing key challenges, including climate change and gender-based violence.
Overall, Minister Mitchell’s visit reaffirmed the UK’s enduring partnership with Nepal and its commitment to promoting sustainable development and inclusive growth in the country. Through targeted investments and strategic partnerships, the UK aims to contribute to Nepal’s journey towards prosperity and resilience in the years ahead.
