Madhav Kumar Nepal planning to register new political party as president approves ordinance

bampijhyala, Kathmandu, August 18

Senior CPN-UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal is all set to register a new party. This comes after Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba endorsed an ordinance yesterday that made it easy for CPN-UML to split. The amendment has been approved by the President.

A source close to leader Nepal said that the party, which will be called CPN-UML Samajwadi, will be registered as soon as the ordinance is passed by President Bidya Devi Bhandari.

“We already have the signatures of 57 central committee members. We will likely have a few more on board by the end of today. As soon as the ordinance is passed, we will go to the Election Commission and get it registered,” said the leader.

Another leader close to Nepal said that there are other names, for the party, are being considered as well but it is likely that that the new party will be named CPN-UML Samajwadi.

The chairperson of the new party will be Madhav Kumar Nepal while other positions are up for grabs.

The Council of Ministers on Tuesday amended the Political Parties Act, 2002, through which a party can split from another if it has 20 per cent members in the party’s central or parliamentary committee.
